Tyler Morris Represents The ILRC in Washington D.C. for NCIL March On Capitol Hill

This past week Tyler Morris, our Director of Marketing and Development , represented The ILRC of Northeast Florida at the 2013 Annual Conference on Independent Living, presented by National Council of Independent Living (NCIL).

Morris represented The ILRC and First Coast residents with disabilities, during the march to Capitol Hill. He was joined by hundreds of other leaders of the IL movement. The march, which spanned a mile, demonstrated the overwhelming support from the National community. This isn't the first march on behalf of persons with disabilities and their rights to equality. Take a look at the video below featuring the historic crawl up Capitol steps.

After nearly an hour long march to the Capitol, demonstrators converged in front of the Capitol building for an empowering rally of speakers, including the leaders in the Independent Living Movement and elected officials working on the issues we care about most.

"The ILRC is part of a much bigger picture; a picture that is bigger than Jacksonville and even bigger than the State of Florida," said Tyler. "These organizations show the world how important these issues are and drive awareness for the disability community."

The NCIL is the longest-running national cross-disability, grassroots organization run by and for people with disabilities. Founded in 1982, NCIL represents thousands of organizations and individuals including Centers for Independent Living (CILs), Statewide Independent Living Councils (SILCs), individuals with disabilities, and other organizations that advocate for the human and civil rights of people with disabilities throughout the United States.

This is the 23rd annual conference and it was held in Washington, D.C. from July 24th though the 27th. Advocates and partners of the disability community gathered together for the four days of informational seminars and workshops to network, discuss current issues within each region, and even march to the Capitol building.

Some of the workshop topics included:

  • Ask For What You Need: A Lesson In Self-Advocacy
  • The CIL/SILC Role in ADRCs: Best Practices and Next Steps
  • How to Create and Run a Disability Rights Campaign Against the Legalization of Assisted Suicide
  • When “No” Doesn't Mean “No”: How to Appeal a Denial of Services
  • Fundraising 101: Beyond the Bake Sale
  • Surviving and Thriving in a Managed Care Environment
  • LGBTQI (Lesbian/Gay/Bisexual/Trans/Queer/Intersex) and Independent Living
  • Serving the Victim and Perpetrator: Considerations for Centers for Independent Living
  • Disability Disclosure & Inquiries: Can’t Ask, Afraid to Tell

When asked what his favorite part of the conference was, Tyler said, "I was extremely inspired and energized for the upcoming year by seeing other CILs from around the country and even the world." Other countries that attended the conference included Russia, South Africa, and the Czech Republic.

We are glad to have Tyler back here at the ILRC ready to go for the next year, ready to put the knowledge that he gathered from the conference to good use!
