DEAF COP CHAT BRINGS COMMUNICATION SOLUTION TO FIRST COAST
JACKSONVILLE, FL - On Tuesday, March 30th the Center for Independent Living (CIL) Jacksonville and the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office will host a virtual Deaf Cop Chat for residents who use sign language to communicate.
The Jacksonville Sheriff's Office will review new communication strategies between officers and individuals with the Deaf and Hard of Hearing community, including newly designed placards for use during interactions where communication may present barriers. JSO will also present their Text-to-911 service and field questions from participants.
“Research shows that people with disabilities are twice as likely to be victims of violent crime,” said Tyler Morris, Executive Director of CIL Jacksonville. “CIL has been able to address this disparity through initiatives funded by the United State’s Department of Justice and Florida’s Office of the Attorney General.”
“The project will provide tangible solutions for community members who rely on sign language to communicate,” said Stephanie Monroe, CIL Jacksonville's Director of Deaf Services. “We appreciate the support from JSO and the resources this partnership provides to a community we thrive to serve. We have enjoyed watching this project come to fruition and look forward to the rippling effect it will have on the Jacksonville Deaf community.”
CIL Jacksonville’s Deaf Cop Chat will be hosted on Zoom and air on Facebook Live on Tuesday, March 30th from 5:00 PM - 7:00 PM EST. Certified sign language interpreters and Closed Captioning will be provided. To request any other reasonable accommodations pursuant to the Americans with Disabilities Act, please contact CIL Jacksonville.
