Meet Angie Miller

and how employment empowers her independence

Angela Miller is an advocate in a wheelchair. The 38-year-old who says she tries not to act her age didn’t realize that she had a disability until she was 13.

“My parents told me that the work was mine,” she explained. “If you want the world to treat you differently they will.”

When she graduated high school in Jacksonville, she sought out the ILRC because she was looking to connect with the disability community.

“I learned about advocacy and peer mentoring as well as individual living skills training from the ILRC,” she adds.  “They give you the tools to make decisions on your own including resume writing, networking and how to interview for a job.”

And that she has. After a stint working for the ILRC, she worked for a time in her family’s commercial wine business and then went to Alabama to live more independently. Today she is employed by the City of Jacksonville’s Disabled Services Division as a Public Relations Support Aide.

A passionate advocate for the disabled, she wants people to think about those with a disability differently. Meeting Angela Miller will do that.

They give you the tools to make decisions on your own including resume writing, networking and how to interview for a job.
