A Tribute to Dr. Kristine Webb

Dr. Kristine Webb, 2017 recipient of the Leadership in Disability Award.

“There is something that is much more scarce, something finer far, something rarer than ability. It is the ability to recognize ability.” - Elbert Green Hubbard

My name is Angie Miller. I currently sit on the ILRC Board of Directors and act as the Lead Facilitator for our newly established Youth Advisory Council. The vision for our members is for them to become leaders. We have been given the privilege of presenting the 1st Annual Youth Advisory Council Leadership in Disability award. It was established to highlight an educator who has, throughout their entire career, been an exemplary advocate for individuals with disabilities in this arena. This year's recipient is a professional woman who personifies what Elbert Green Hubbard said - and she has made her life mission to equip others with the tools they need to embrace this vision as well!

Kris Wiest Webb, Ph.D. is a Professor in the Department of Exceptional, Deaf, and Interpreter Education and former director of the Disability Resource Center (DRC) at the University of North Florida (UNF). Under her direction, the DRC experienced tremendous growth in the numbers of students who use accommodations and services and the number of successful graduates increased 10 times more than students who graduated a decade earlier. Further, the grade point averages of the graduates who were registered with the DRC were equal or exceeded the mean grade point average of graduates from the general population.

Dr. Webb has developed several programs for students enrolled in education classes and registered with the Disability Resource Center to highlight the importance of community and professional service. Along with her interest in teacher preparation, Kris has a long-standing passion for promoting successful post-secondary education experiences, family involvement and collaboration, and transition to adult life for individuals with disabilities.

She has been a member of the Independent Living Foundation since 2011 and has been instrumental in ensuring that students who attend our summer camps are given access to the UNF campus so they can get some first-hand experience of what they can expect from a post-secondary atmosphere.

On behalf of the entire Northeast Florida disability community, the Youth Advisory Council would like to thank Dr. Webb for all her advocacy work over the years and especially for being such a passionate visionary and example of leadership for everyone who has the pleasure of crossing her path. For this, we salute you!
